Carlos Leon Salzedo

Carlos Leon Salzedo (1908-1983) was a prominent American harpist, composer, and educator known for his significant contributions to the harp repertoire and technique. Born in the Philippines, Salzedo moved to the United States, where he became a central figure in the contemporary classical music scene. Salzedo's genre primarily encompasses classical music, with a focus on chamber music and solo harp compositions. He is best known for works such as "Chant de Linos," "Sonatine," and "Suite of Four Pieces," which showcase his innovative approach to harp playing and composition. His techniques, including the use of harmonics and extended techniques, expanded the expressive capabilities of the harp. As a teacher, Salzedo influenced a generation of harpists, founding the harp department at the Curtis Institute of Music and serving on the faculty at Juilliard.
